Responsibilities
- Own the guidance firmware and virtual fencing logic that determines when and how to guide each animal.
- Design guidance algorithms, state machines, geometry, virtual fences, paths, and low-bandwidth radio protocols.
- Build and deploy modern C++23 software on FreeRTOS under tight power, memory, concurrency, and real-time constraints.
- Debug intermittent, field-only problems using logs, telemetry, and system and animal understanding.
- Contribute to the overall quality and reliability of the guidance system through better patterns, tooling, and defect detection.
- Collaborate with firmware, backend, frontend, design, and animal experts, including observing animals in the field.
- Support and mentor other engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and context sharing.
Requirements
- Solid experience shipping software for resource-constrained systems such as embedded devices, consoles, or real-time engines.
- Strong C++ fundamentals and software design pattern knowledge.
- Comfort with concurrency, limited memory and stack, and real-time behavior.
- Good judgment under uncertainty involving inaccurate sensor data, unexpected animal behavior, and unclear requirements.
- Ability to reason about geometry, probability, and timing.
- Strong ownership and ability to follow problems through to root cause.
- Effective communication, feedback, and teamwork skills.
- Preferred experience with state machines or pathfinding.
- Preferred experience with real-time operating system internals, interrupts, scheduling, priorities, and timing guarantees.
- Preferred experience with safety-critical systems or unreliable, low-bandwidth communication links.
- Experience with animals or curiosity about farming, animal welfare, or outdoor hardware is beneficial.
Benefits
- Wellness leave and unlimited paid annual leave.
- Southern Cross Health Insurance.
- Six months of fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers and four weeks of fully paid secondary caregiver leave, plus other parental benefits.
- Annual $1000 self-development budget.
- Salary, benefits, and employee stock ownership plan.
- Snacks and drinks provided.
- Office-first work arrangement with daily office attendance as the default, with flexibility when needed.
About Halter
