Responsibilities
- Set the technology vision, roadmap, and architectural direction for Venmo’s data platform infrastructure and performance engineering domain.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership across databases, data pipelines, messaging systems, distributed caching, and performance engineering.
- Improve the effectiveness of software engineers across a large domain and identify cross-team opportunities for broad impact.
- Advise senior executives on technical decisions and multi-year business strategies.
- Solve ambiguous and unfamiliar problems using discovery, research, build-versus-buy judgment, and creative technical approaches.
- Mentor engineers and propagate technical influence across the engineering organization.
Requirements
- 10+ years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 15+ years of professional experience in software engineering or data platform roles, with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production cloud environments, with AWS preferred.
- Deep hands-on expertise with relational and NoSQL databases, distributed caching, and message queue architectures.
- Strong DevOps engineering experience, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD for data systems, and operational automation.
- Experience applying AI-first development practices and AI tooling to engineering productivity.
- Track record delivering performance and scalability improvements for consumer-facing applications serving tens of millions of users.
- Established technical influence across large engineering organizations without direct management authority.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex technical trade-offs to executives.
- Preferred experience in fintech, payments, regulated industries, highly reliable transaction processing, resilience engineering, failure injection testing, business continuity, modern data pipelines, real-time analytics, and AI/ML infrastructure.
Benefits
- Pay range is $198,000.00-$323,950.00 annually depending on location, experience, and expertise; additional compensation may include performance bonus, equity, or other incentives.
