Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain shared database platform components, libraries, migration tooling, safety checks, and developer abstractions.
- Establish reliable patterns for database connections, transactions, pooling, retries, timeouts, queries, migrations, and schema management.
- Build automation, internal tooling, guardrails, and self-service workflows for database provisioning, access, testing, observability, and operations.
- Architect and improve AWS RDS/Aurora MySQL and PostgreSQL infrastructure, including replicas, backups, failover, monitoring, parameter tuning, and capacity planning.
- Investigate and resolve systemic database issues such as inefficient queries, connection storms, lock contention, replication lag, unsafe migrations, and capacity bottlenecks.
- Create dashboards, alerts, SLOs, SLIs, runbooks, migration observability, backup validation, restore testing, disaster recovery, and failover readiness processes.
- Partner with application, infrastructure, security, compliance, and engineering teams on database standards, access controls, auditability, encryption, secrets management, and least-privilege controls.
- Mentor engineers and use automation and AI tooling to improve database design, migration review, query analysis, incident investigation, and developer productivity.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of professional experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, database engineering, SRE, or platform engineering.
- Strong production programming ability in Go, Python, or TypeScript.
- Experience building production-quality internal tools, libraries, frameworks, services, or platform components used by other engineers.
- Deep hands-on experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL in highly available production environments.
- Strong knowledge of connection pooling, transactions, isolation levels, retries, timeouts, deadlocks, locking, migrations, and query execution.
- Experience building shared database access patterns, ORM wrappers, migration frameworks, or developer-facing database tooling.
- Hands-on experience with AWS RDS/Aurora, including provisioning, upgrades, replicas, backups, failover, monitoring, parameter tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with database connection management technologies such as RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, ProxySQL, or application-level pooling.
- Ability to analyze performance using query plans, indexes, slow query logs, wait events, locks, metrics, and application traces.
- Experience designing safe production database migration processes and observability for database-backed applications.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling such as Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes, or Helm.
- Ability to influence teams through design reviews, documentation, technical standards, and practical implementation.
- Experience working with Claude or equivalent large language model tools is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
- Preferred experience includes Golang development, database libraries and SDKs, microservices platforms, high-volume transactional systems, PCI DSS or SOC 2 environments, access governance, operational automation, distributed systems, observability tools, and supporting data stores such as Elasticsearch.
Benefits
- The role is full-time and remote.
- The salary range is $5,000–$9,500 USD per month gross.
- The company emphasizes an engineering culture centered on high standards, autonomy, action, trust, constructive disagreement, and delivery.
