Responsibilities
- Own architecture, hosting, infrastructure strategy, integrations, and long-term platform direction across the web ecosystem.
- Remain hands-on by building, reviewing, and debugging software alongside the engineers being led.
- Own deployment and release processes, CI/CD, automation, plugin updates, and dependency updates.
- Manage plugin, dependency, and security remediation across the portfolio.
- Establish engineering and QA standards with the SDET team.
- Lead technical discovery and estimation, surfacing dependencies, risks, and sequencing needs for Product and stakeholders.
- Participate in Product discovery and manage stakeholder expectations around technical feasibility and commitments.
- Improve engineering work triage, allocation, and sequencing.
- Mentor and develop engineers, including senior individual contributors, and reduce key-person dependencies through documentation and knowledge sharing.
- Develop and sequence a 12- to 24-month strategy for consolidating or migrating WordPress and Drupal sites.
- Extend technical leadership across additional workstreams and technology stacks over time.
Requirements
- Eight or more years of professional software engineering experience, including experience as a technical lead, staff engineer, or engineering lead for a team or portfolio.
- Demonstrated ability to remain heavily hands-on while leading, with architecture and systems-thinking experience across an application ecosystem.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineers, including senior individual contributors, plus direct supervisory experience with performance expectations and reviews.
- Strong technical judgment, estimation, risk identification, stakeholder communication, and product discovery skills.
- Deep current WordPress experience with custom themes and plugins, Gutenberg, Advanced Custom Fields, WP-CLI, and multisite portfolios.
- Deep current Drupal experience with custom modules and themes, Drupal 10 or later, entity and configuration management, Views, Drush, Composer-based builds, and headless or decoupled Drupal using JSON:API or GraphQL with a JavaScript front end.
- Strong modern PHP and object-oriented design experience, including Composer.
- SQL experience, including query performance work.
- Front-end JavaScript experience with technologies such as Next.js and React, plus modern build tooling.
- Experience owning hosting, deployment pipelines, and environment configuration for production web platforms.
- Strong CI/CD and DevOps experience with automated build, test, and deployment pipelines, infrastructure as code, containerization, environment and secrets management, and production monitoring, logging, and alerting.
- General knowledge of SSL certificates, DNS, and web protocols.
- Preferred experience with Upsun, AWS, Cloudflare or comparable CDN platforms, site portfolio consolidation or migration, WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility, and marketing or campaign teams.
- Experience using AI-enabled tools and practices to accelerate work.
