Staff Software Engineer, Backend
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Design scalable systems for automated, self-service application development, sandbox provisioning, and production delivery.
- Build and evolve backend services, platform APIs, event infrastructure, and partner integrations.
- Define engineering best practices and help select technologies for the platform.
- Conduct architecture, design, and code reviews while mentoring engineers across levels.
- Champion integration and unit testing and ensure production work is monitored, supported, and delivered with quality.
- Use AI tools in the development workflow and help establish effective evaluation practices for their output.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of experience building backend systems and APIs.
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language.
- Experience designing platform APIs used by other teams and applying platform-oriented thinking.
- In-depth understanding of AWS, microservices, distributed systems, and enterprise messaging.
- Proficiency with traditional databases; experience with document-based or columnar data stores is preferred.
- Ability to understand consuming teams’ needs and deliver clean, ergonomic platform solutions.
- Prior experience with distributed systems, enterprise messaging systems, or microservices.
