Responsibilities
- Own a long-term engagement area involving high-risk technical domains such as sharding core data stores, resource utilisation, and distributed systems at scale.
- Write, instrument, refactor, and rebuild production software to improve reliability, efficiency, resilience, latency, and recovery outcomes.
- Embed with product and infrastructure teams to guide them toward shipping with greater confidence and less operational toil.
- Debug unfamiliar large codebases and fix the underlying causes of production problems.
- Contribute shared platform capabilities when recurring patterns require broader solutions.
- Pair with, mentor, and learn from fellow production engineers.
- Improve incident outcomes through fewer incidents, faster recovery, lower severity, effective observability, and stronger reliability practices.
Requirements
- Experience owning reliability work in large-scale distributed systems, including writing fixes when systems failed.
- Experience working as an engineer embedded in or closely partnering with product or feature teams.
- Commercial production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
- Practical experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs.
- Strong debugging ability across unfamiliar codebases and the ability to influence systems improvements without formal authority.
- Deep knowledge of networking, Linux internals, process scheduling, memory, I/O, and network-stack behavior.
- Understanding of distributed-systems patterns including consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
- Experience instrumenting systems and building effective tracing, dashboards, alerting, and service-level objectives.
- Production-scale Kubernetes and container orchestration experience, including scheduler-level understanding.
- Experience profiling JVM applications or systems processes and resolving difficult performance problems.
- Meaningful AWS experience and understanding of cloud behavior under load and at system edges.
- Experience participating in on-call rotations and serious production incident response.
- Preferred experience includes enterprise SaaS, JVM garbage-collection and thread tuning, multi-region or sharding projects, data-store migrations, eBPF, and kernel instrumentation.
