Responsibilities
- Define how Production Engineering engages with product and infrastructure teams, including engagement scope and handoff practices.
- Lead technically complex engagements involving sharding, multi-region architecture, JVM performance, and distributed systems reliability.
- Set the technical standards and hiring calibration bar for Canva’s Production Engineering function.
- Develop pairing strategies for staff and mid-level engineers and grow production engineering capability across the organization.
- Connect production engineering work to the product roadmap and influence production-readiness decisions before launch.
- Define and track reliability and delivery metrics such as incident severity, incident duration, and successful feature launches.
- Remain hands-on in code while guiding product and infrastructure teams toward more reliable, efficient, resilient systems.
Requirements
- Experience owning reliability for large-scale distributed systems and investigating and shipping durable production solutions.
- Experience leading or shaping an embedded technical function that works across team boundaries.
- Hands-on software engineering experience at senior scope, including deep involvement in solving difficult technical problems.
- Experience influencing technical decisions across organizations through trusted technical judgment.
- Production-scale experience with Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language.
- Practical distributed-systems experience with sharding, replication, failure modes, consistency tradeoffs, consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, and circuit breakers.
- Knowledge of Linux internals, including process scheduling, memory, I/O, and networking.
- Experience building observability tooling such as tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
- Production experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration, including scheduler-level understanding.
- Experience profiling JVM applications or systems-level processes and fixing performance issues.
- Production experience with AWS and its large-scale failure modes.
- On-call and incident-response experience.
- Nice-to-have experience in enterprise SaaS, JVM internals, garbage-collection tuning, thread profiling, data-store migrations, multi-region architecture, or sharding.
