Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineering teams to identify repetitive, time-consuming, or error-prone work and build automation tools.
  • Process telemetry, hardware design databases, configuration files, and manufacturing and test records to automate review, flag anomalies, and surface insights.
  • Design agentic AI systems, multi-agent workflows, and MCP servers that let engineers query and act on data across internal systems.
  • Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines, mission workflows, and review and sign-off processes.
  • Build internal web dashboards for mission status, open work, and data review results.
  • Prototype rapidly, then deliver production-grade, maintainable tools.
  • Test and validate tools, including evaluating AI outputs against known-good results for flight-critical use.
  • Prioritize work by return on investment and track engineering hours saved.
  • Work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, engineering, math, or physics, or 4+ years of professional experience building automation for practical engineering use cases in lieu of a degree.
  • At least 1 year of software engineering experience focused on automation tools and/or AI integrations; professional and personal projects are applicable.
  • At least 1 year of Python programming experience.
  • Experience building tools adopted by engineers or other end users, gathering requirements, and iterating on user feedback is preferred.
  • Experience processing large engineering or scientific datasets with tools such as pandas and NumPy is preferred.
  • Experience building code or configuration generators from design databases, spreadsheets, or schemas is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI systems, multi-agent workflows, prompt and context engineering, tool or function calling, and MCP servers is preferred.
  • Ability to design evaluations for LLM-based tools and choose deterministic scripts when appropriate is preferred.
  • Experience integrating systems through REST APIs and learning unfamiliar tools and data sources is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of relational, non-relational, and vector databases with strong SQL skills is preferred.
  • Full-stack web application or dashboard experience, including React/TypeScript frontends and Python backends such as FastAPI or Flask, is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Linux, Git, testing, CI/CD, and monitoring is preferred.
  • Experience deploying containerized applications with Docker and Kubernetes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with hardware engineering concepts or experience transitioning from hardware or test engineering to software is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical tradeoffs across engineering disciplines are preferred.
  • Ability to own ambiguous problems from initial concept through long-term maintenance is preferred.
  • Applicants must meet applicable ITAR authorization requirements.

Benefits

  • Base salary range is $125,000-$160,000 for Level 1 and $145,000-$195,000 for Level 2.
  • Potential eligibility for company stock or long-term cash awards, discretionary bonuses, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Medical, vision, dental, 401(k), short- and long-term disability, life insurance, paid parental leave, discounts, and other perks.

About SpaceX

10,000+ employees

SpaceX designs, manufactures, and launches orbital rockets and spacecraft, and operates Starlink, a global satellite internet network for consumers, businesses, and governments. Its revenue comes from commercial and government launch services (Falcon 9/Falcon Heavy, Dragon cargo and crew to the ISS) and subscription broadband with Starlink hardware and service. Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Hawthorne, California, the privately held company serves NASA and commercial satellite operators, building most systems in-house.
