Base Salary

$143k - $304k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Own availability, durability, performance, and scale for large-scale Azure SQL databases supporting a production Azure service.
  • Lead query-plan analysis, indexing, concurrency control, stored procedure optimization, workload isolation, and diagnosis of complex database issues.
  • Define capacity planning models, performance guardrails, growth-readiness strategies, and database reliability standards.
  • Influence schema design, access patterns, transaction boundaries, consistency models, and database-related architecture decisions.
  • Design and execute safe automated schema changes, configuration updates, and live-system data migrations with rollout, validation, and rollback strategies.
  • Define Azure SQL telemetry and integrate database health signals into service-level monitoring and reliability models with SREs.
  • Serve as the database technical authority during live-site incidents and on-call rotations, and lead root-cause analysis.
  • Build reusable automation and tooling, reduce database technical debt and manual operations, and share practices across teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud background check.
  • Extensive experience operating and administering Azure SQL in large-scale, highly available production environments.
  • Expertise in database performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimization for high-traffic, mission-critical systems.
  • Understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals for relational databases, including replication, failover, durability, and consistency.
  • Experience designing and executing online schema changes and data migrations on live systems.
  • Experience providing technical leadership during high-severity incident response and driving corrective actions.
  • Ability to influence engineers and architects without direct authority and set technical direction across teams.
  • Experience with Azure SQL geo-replication, failover groups, high-availability patterns, SRE or reliability-focused engineering, automation, mentoring, and cross-team technical strategy.

Benefits

  • The typical U.S. base pay range is USD $142,800-$274,800 per year; specific ranges apply in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
  • The position is open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until filled.
