Responsibilities

  • Design, build, operate, and own backend services in Kotlin or Java in production.
  • Turn ambiguous underwriting problems into simple, reliable software and determine the highest-value problems to solve.
  • Shape APIs, domain models, persistence, reliability, observability, and long-term platform architecture.
  • Build expertise in the underwriting domain and challenge requirements when appropriate.
  • Design and build agent-assisted workflows while determining where agents act, advise, or defer to humans.
  • Use AI coding tools including Claude while remaining accountable for code quality, security, and correctness.
  • Collaborate with frontend engineers, product partners, client-facing teams, and underwriters.
  • Give and receive direct feedback and help raise the engineering bar.

Requirements

  • Strong professional experience building and running backend systems in Kotlin, Java, or another JVM language.
  • Sound judgment in architecture and system design, including prioritization and long-term technical tradeoffs.
  • Evidence of shipping software that solved a real customer or business problem, ideally with end-to-end ownership.
  • Self-directed approach to identifying and solving high-value problems.
  • Clear communication with underwriters, executives, and engineers.
  • Comfort working on ambiguous problems without established precedents.
  • Responsible and critical use of AI coding tools.
  • Receptiveness to frequent direct feedback.
  • Experience in insurance, underwriting, or another complex regulated domain is helpful but not required.
  • Experience across backend and frontend is helpful but not required.
  • Experience building workflow, decision-support, or agent-assisted products is helpful but not required.
  • Experience working directly with enterprise clients is helpful but not required.
