Base Salary
$251k - $310k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead the strategy for curating and constructing massive-scale multimodal pre-training datasets and defining data mixtures for Waymo-specific driving understanding.
- Design and implement SFT, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, GRPO, and PPO pipelines to improve instruction following, reasoning, and driving-rationale prediction.
- Architect scalable inference and evaluation pipelines that use foundation models to source, sample, and autolabel critical autonomous-driving edge cases.
- Conduct ablation studies and establish training recipes, scaling laws, model architecture choices, token budgets, and loss-function practices for large GPU and TPU clusters.
- Drive the data-flywheel architecture and coordinate technical strategy across ML Infrastructure, Perception, Behavior, and AI Foundation teams.
- Own the long-term foundation-model roadmap, mentor senior engineers, lead design reviews, and establish engineering practices from prototyping through production deployment.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, ML, or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of hands-on experience designing, training, and scaling deep learning models, including at least 3+ years focused on LLM or VLM training.
- Expertise across the foundation-model lifecycle, including pre-training data curation, tokenization, distributed training, and advanced post-training techniques.
- Expert-level understanding of FSDP, Megatron, JAX, or Pax for reliable massive-model training.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals in Python, PyTorch, or JAX, with experience building reliable and highly scalable ML systems.
- Ability to define technical roadmaps and lead complex, multi-quarter initiatives across multiple teams.
- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field is preferred.
- Preferred qualifications include top-tier AI publications, advanced reinforcement learning experience for language or vision tasks, foundation-model data engineering at billions or trillions of tokens, and experience with multimodal perception in robotics or autonomous driving.
- Demonstrated staff-level impact through product influence, zero-to-one ML architecture work, and technical leadership is preferred.
