Software Engineer - Onboard Maps and State Estimation

Base Salary
$190k - $265k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the onboard live-map estimator end to end, fusing HD map priors with live perception into a real-time world estimate.
- Build map change detection for boundary shifts, stop-line moves, road closures, and other divergence between maps and perception.
- Define planner-facing map trust contracts, including confidence semantics, degraded-mode behavior, and operating points.
- Build ground-truth, metrics, evaluation, and regression-testing pipelines to maintain estimator and detector quality.
- Ship modern C++ estimation code that meets real-time budgets on embedded compute.
- Extend the system to aggregate fleet drive-log detections into map freshness and correction pipelines.
Requirements
- 5+ years of production software development experience, including ownership of the estimation core of at least one shipped system.
- Production experience with state estimation fundamentals such as factor graphs or filtering, data association, uncertainty representation and propagation, and 3D geometry and transforms.
- Experience fusing heterogeneous map, perception, and sensor sources into a single world estimate with rigorous error characterization.
- Strong modern C++ skills and experience developing for real-time embedded compute.
- Experience building ground-truth or metrics pipelines and using them to maintain shipped operating points and prevent regressions.
- Ability to reason about uncertainty, graceful degradation, catastrophic errors, and safety-relevant system design.
- Experience defining system interfaces and negotiating contracts with consumer teams.
- Preferred experience with map change detection, live or lifelong mapping, HD map semantics, lane graphs, topology, map formats, GTSAM or comparable factor-graph frameworks, Lie group methods, degraded-mode or integrity-monitor design, and an MS or PhD focused on state estimation or SLAM.
