Staff Backend Engineer - NIRA

Responsibilities
- Own strategy, design, and delivery for a core part of the NIRA platform
- Set technical direction and identify strategic needs and risks
- Lead large, high-stakes projects from design through launch
- Promote adoption of Claude, Cursor, and Augment across the team
- Mentor engineers through the Senior level
- Lead SEV1 and lower incident response through resolution
- Coordinate with Principal Engineering and teams across NIRA, Cashalo, and the United States
- Influence product direction through technical tradeoffs
- Reduce unnecessary complexity in system designs
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building web APIs, ideally using Java and Spring Boot
- Deep experience with financial systems, including state machines and complex lifecycles
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and queue-based architectures
- Proven experience scaling consumer products at high transaction volume
- Ability to own initiatives end-to-end, including design, execution, and reporting
- Ability to make fast decisions with incomplete information
- Experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar
- Enthusiasm for AI development tools
- Preference for simple designs over clever abstractions
