Senior Backend Engineer (Contract to Hire)

- Design PostgreSQL schemas, indexes, queries, migrations, and performance strategies for high-write scheduling and forecasting workloads.
- Build, operate, and harden AWS infrastructure including Lambda, RDS, App Runner, and Bedrock using Terraform.
- Design, build, and scale backend services in Python and FastAPI.
- Own REST/OpenAPI contracts and generated clients used by Next.js/React web and Expo/React Native mobile applications.
- Extend AI-assisted product features using AWS Bedrock, Claude, and MCP integrations.
- Collaborate with data and ML teams on forecasting pipelines using Prophet, Pandas, and NumPy.
- Write and maintain pytest suites and strengthen CI/CD gates in GitHub Actions.
- Participate in architecture decisions, code reviews, mentoring, and end-to-end feature delivery across product, mobile, and data teams.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, including production Python experience.
- Deep production PostgreSQL experience covering schema design, indexing, query optimization, and migrations.
- Hands-on experience building and operating AWS infrastructure such as Lambda, RDS, or App Runner, with familiarity with IAM, networking, cost trade-offs, and ideally Terraform.
- Experience designing, versioning, and documenting REST APIs with OpenAPI or Swagger for multiple client platforms.
- Comfort with Docker and Docker Compose for containerized local development.
- Ability to work independently through ambiguity and make pragmatic architecture and product decisions.
- Strong testing, code review, architecture, written communication, and asynchronous collaboration skills.
- Preferred qualifications include ML/data tooling experience, LLM or agentic tooling integrations, familiarity with Next.js/React/TypeScript, workforce or scheduling technology experience, early-stage startup experience, and mentoring or technical design leadership.
