Responsibilities
- Analyze and document existing image-processing and analysis code written primarily in MATLAB, Perl, and Java.
- Reimplement and reengineer MATLAB image-processing routines in Python using libraries such as OpenCV and scikit-image.
- Develop unit tests, integration tests, performance benchmarks, and profiling-based optimizations.
- Maintain, enhance, document, and architect the modernized software codebase according to customer and project needs.
- Contribute to coding standards, testing frameworks, version-control workflows, and CI/CD practices.
- Research and recommend tools, utilities, libraries, and techniques that improve software development and analysis capabilities.
- Collaborate with team members, NIF scientists, stakeholders, and customers through requirements clarification, code reviews, and implementation validation.
- Mentor team members and collaborators in Python, software development best practices, and modern engineering techniques.
- At the SES.4 level, provide technical direction and leadership for image processing, software architecture, technical strategy, and software engineering practices.
Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance and U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant software development experience using Python 3 as the primary development language and advanced knowledge of Python fundamentals and idiomatic practices.
- Significant image-processing or signal-processing experience in Python using libraries such as OpenCV, scikit-image, NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas.
- Advanced knowledge of MATLAB programming and the ability to understand MATLAB code and document its functionality.
- Advanced experience implementing automated unit and integration testing, along with significant experience in code profiling and performance optimization.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills for collaboration and explanation of technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
- For SES.4, highly advanced Python and software-development experience with large, complex systems; expert-level technical direction, coding standards, workflows, technology evaluation, and stakeholder communication.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
- Prior experience reengineering a large software project into a new language and architecture is preferred.
- Experience with SQL and Oracle, Git-based forges such as GitLab, GitHub, or Bitbucket, CI/CD pipelines, or Docker is preferred.
