Privacy and Civil Liberties Software Engineer, Internship

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop full-stack software products for privacy, data protection, AI governance, and accountability.
  • Build security and governance primitives, auditor applications, AI governance workflows, data protection tools, or other customer-focused solutions.
  • Work in small teams with minimal supervision and own end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects.
  • Contribute as a software engineer, forward-deployed engineer, or policy researcher depending on project needs.
  • Collaborate with engineers, forward-deployed teams, deployment strategists, product teams, lawyers, policy experts, and customers.
  • Use appropriate engineering tools to solve novel socio-technical problems and improve customer workflows.

Requirements

  • Engineering background, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or Data Science.
  • Proficiency with one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, C++, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar.
  • Must be planning to graduate in 2027, with this position serving as the final internship before graduation.
  • Interest in understanding and addressing technology’s impact on society is valued.
  • Ability to learn continuously, work independently, and make decisions with minimal direction.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teammates in an evolving environment.
  • Experience or curiosity in privacy, data protection, AI governance, AI testing and evaluation, national security, technology policy, or technology ethics is a plus.
