Senior Numerical Optimization Engineer (Arsenal 2)
Anduril IndustriesBase Salary
$191k - $253k/yr
Responsibilities
- Formulate shipyard production scheduling as a mathematical optimization problem covering precedence, spatial exclusion, resource capacity, qualifications, calendars, shifts, and material availability.
- Own the solver-agnostic scheduling interface and integrate and benchmark commercial and open-source optimization solvers.
- Build fast local-repair and background global-re-solve workflows that respond to factory disruptions and swap in improved schedules.
- Develop schedule-stability objectives, replanning policies, quality benchmarks, bounds, regression tests, and solution observability.
- Research decomposition, metaheuristics, rolling-horizon methods, and non-traditional optimization hardware where appropriate.
- Determine disruption blast radius, scope re-solves, merge results into live schedules, and resolve boundary conflicts.
- Generate recovery work from geometric queries and scheduling logic, and compose scheduled operations into dispatchable manufacturing work orders.
- Write production-quality software with comprehensive tests, participate in reviews and architecture discussions, and support production systems through an on-call rotation.
- Partner with manufacturing engineers, planners, operators, computational geometry engineers, and data engineers to translate factory processes and data into scheduling systems.
- Use AI tooling and automation in development and contribute to team engineering practices.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building production software systems.
- Deep expertise in numerical optimization, including linear programming, mixed-integer linear programming, constraint programming, combinatorial optimization, or metaheuristics.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate real-world problems mathematically and deploy the resulting models in dependable systems.
- Hands-on experience with optimization solvers and libraries such as Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools, SCIP, PuLP, CVXPY, or Pyomo.
- Expert proficiency in Python for scientific computing and robust software development, with strong NumPy, SciPy, and Pandas foundations.
- Strong grounding in graph algorithms, constraint satisfaction, and computational complexity analysis.
- Experience with scheduling or resource allocation at a scale where exact methods stop working.
- Experience building reliable systems under operational constraints such as high availability, latency budgets, or degraded inputs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for explaining optimization trade-offs to non-specialist factory planners.
- Advanced degree in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent depth built in practice.
- U.S. Person status is required to access export-controlled data.
- Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. and scheduling or large-scale optimization publications or production work.
- Preferred experience includes dynamic rescheduling, solver benchmarking without known optima, metaheuristics, decomposition methods, C++ or Rust optimization kernels, large graph representations, manufacturing or OT domains, MES/ERP/PLM/APS systems, GPU or HPC optimization, quantum annealing and QUBO, and shipbuilding or complex discrete manufacturing.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance is preferred.
Benefits
- Full-time employees receive comprehensive benefits available at little to no cost, including health and recovery support.
- Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers as part of total compensation.
