Responsibilities
- Define Falcon’s performance strategy and technical roadmap based on benchmarks and customer workloads.
- Lead the design of cross-cutting optimizations in the optimizer and code generator and the interfaces between the compiler, runtime, and garbage collector.
- Make architectural decisions about the optimization pipeline, compile-time budget, and tiering strategy.
- Lead enablement of Falcon on new hardware platforms and Azul products.
- Mentor senior engineers, review critical designs and code, and set standards for performance methodology and validation.
- Represent Azul in the LLVM community and drive upstream design discussions and contributions.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional experience developing optimizing compilers or JIT compilers.
- Track record of technical leadership and ownership of major production compiler components or optimization frameworks.
- Expert C++ skills and experience with large, long-lived codebases.
- Deep expertise in compiler optimization and code generation, including tradeoffs among peak performance, compile time, warmup, and code size.
- Expert performance analysis skills down to the microarchitecture level.
- Preferred experience includes significant contributions to LLVM or another major compiler, managed-language JIT compilers such as HotSpot C2, Graal, V8, or .NET RyuJIT, and collaboration with runtime and garbage collection teams on speculation, deoptimization, and barrier design.
