Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert and technical advisor for complex systems, architecture, and engineering challenges.
- Lead architecture, design, development, and evolution of large-scale cross-domain software systems and platform capabilities.
- Design and develop scalable backend APIs, distributed systems, cloud-native services, and high-volume data-processing capabilities.
- Drive technical strategy, architectural decisions, modernization, and technical-debt reduction across multiple teams and domains.
- Lead production incident response, root-cause analysis, reliability improvements, observability practices, and operational readiness.
- Champion secure coding, privacy, auditability, compliance, and responsible handling of payroll, tax, financial, and personally identifiable information.
- Evaluate and implement practical AI-assisted engineering, agentic-system, automation, and developer-productivity solutions.
- Mentor engineers, lead design and code reviews, conduct technical interviews, and raise engineering quality standards.
- Coordinate cross-team dependencies and lead initiatives with substantial technical complexity, risk, integration requirements, and customer impact.
- Partner with product, architecture, compliance, operations, customer support, SRE, and engineering stakeholders to connect technical decisions to business and customer outcomes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and leading complex enterprise software systems.
- Deep expertise in Java and/or Python development.
- Proven experience architecting and delivering scalable backend services, APIs, distributed systems, and enterprise applications.
- Strong knowledge of distributed-system architecture, design patterns, scalability, resiliency, concurrency, performance, data consistency, SQL, and data modeling.
- Hands-on experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure and distributed caching technologies such as Redis and/or Hazelcast.
- Strong experience with observability platforms including Grafana, Kibana, or OpenTelemetry, plus production incident resolution and root-cause analysis.
- Strong understanding of secure software development, CI/CD, DevOps practices, production operations, and service ownership.
- Hands-on experience applying AI-assisted development tools and workflows to real engineering problems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex multi-team initiatives, develop technical strategy, influence decisions beyond the immediate team, and mentor engineers.
- Preferred experience includes payroll, tax, HR, fintech, compliance, financial systems, regulated domains, high-volume transaction processing, cloud-native microservices, infrastructure as code, system migrations, performance engineering, resilient architecture, AI agents, engineering automation, and technical thought leadership.
- Excellent communication, independent judgment, customer orientation, and ability to operate in ambiguous and highly complex situations.
