Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture, design, development, and evolution of large-scale cross-domain software systems and platform capabilities for payroll, compliance, and enterprise applications.
  • Design and develop scalable backend APIs, distributed systems, cloud-native services, and high-volume data-processing capabilities.
  • Drive technical strategy, architecture decisions, modernization, technical-debt reduction, and adoption of engineering practices across multiple teams.
  • Champion responsible AI adoption in engineering workflows and lead proofs of concept for AI-enabled tools, automation, and productivity solutions.
  • Own service health, reliability, observability, production readiness, on-call participation, incident response, root-cause analysis, and preventive improvements.
  • Embed secure coding, privacy, auditability, data governance, and compliance considerations into system architecture and software development.
  • Mentor engineers, lead architecture and code reviews, support technical hiring, and build engineering communities and knowledge-sharing practices.
  • Coordinate cross-team dependencies and lead large initiatives with substantial technical complexity, risk, integration requirements, and organizational visibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and leading complex enterprise software systems.
  • Deep expertise in Java and/or Python, with experience architecting scalable backend services, APIs, distributed systems, and enterprise applications.
  • Strong understanding of distributed-system architecture, scalability, resiliency, concurrency, performance, data consistency, SQL, and data modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure and distributed caching technologies such as Redis or Hazelcast.
  • Strong experience with observability platforms including Grafana, Kibana, OpenTelemetry, or similar technologies.
  • Proven ability to lead technically complex, multi-team initiatives, develop technical strategy, and translate broad business outcomes into technical solutions.
  • Experience leading complex production incidents, root-cause analysis, preventive improvements, secure software development, sensitive customer-data handling, and service ownership.
  • Demonstrated AI-first engineering mindset with hands-on experience applying AI-assisted development tools and workflows to real engineering problems.
  • Ability to mentor engineers, influence technical decisions beyond the immediate team, communicate complex concepts, operate independently, and exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations.
  • Preferred experience includes payroll, tax, HR, fintech, compliance, financial systems, regulated domains, high-volume transaction processing, cloud-native microservices, platform modernization, migrations, performance engineering, resilient architecture, AI agents, and developer productivity solutions.
  • Preferred qualifications also include technical thought leadership through architecture forums, publications, patents, conferences, or engineering communities.
