Responsibilities
- Lead and support complex cybersecurity research projects involving red teaming, blue teaming, threat analysis, and mitigation strategies.
- Develop tools, workflows, algorithms, and techniques for vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, adversary emulation, and threat mitigation.
- Analyze software, firmware, malware, and operational technology systems to identify weaknesses, malicious behavior, and attack vectors.
- Conduct in-depth security assessments of OT/ICS networks and evaluate vulnerabilities that could cause physical system impacts.
- Identify emerging threats, develop technical requirements, and help shape LLNL cybersecurity initiatives and capabilities.
- Collaborate with sponsors and stakeholders, develop research proposals, pursue program growth opportunities, and align work with mission objectives.
- Mentor team members and communicate technical information to multidisciplinary teams, non-cyber experts, senior management, policymakers, and external sponsors.
- At the SES.4 level, direct highly complex technical tasks, set research vision and strategy, influence technical direction, and develop innovative solutions to abstract problems.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.
- Bachelor's degree with significant focus in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience leading program analysis of cyber-physical system security, OT network design and security, or intelligent-adversary threat assessment and mitigation.
- Advanced experience in mathematical optimization, electric energy systems operations and planning, or related relevant areas.
- Advanced knowledge of deep reinforcement learning, neural networks, and/or large language models.
- Significant experience communicating technical information across multidisciplinary teams, advising senior management, and collaborating effectively.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.
- At the SES.4 level, expert-level technical and project leadership experience, experience setting technical direction and vision, writing research proposals, securing sponsor funding, and expertise in operational technology security, OT threat hunting, and/or artificial intelligence for cybersecurity research.
- Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree; knowledge of embedded systems, scientific data analysis, machine learning, systems programming, software engineering, formal verification methods, or high-performance computing; experience with industrial control systems software and hardware; and experience with DOE, DHS, DOD, utilities, manufacturing, hardware/software companies, or cybersecurity firms.
