Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Ubuntu Linux kernels for embedded devices, desktop and server systems, cloud environments, and multiple architectures
- Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, the community, and internal testing
- Improve tooling and automation for Ubuntu Linux kernel delivery and testing
- Submit, review, and apply kernel patches while collaborating with internal and external upstream maintainers
- Work with silicon, cloud, and hardware manufacturer delivery teams on new platforms
- Support security updates, patching, driver integration, exploit mitigation, and expanded hardware support
- Take responsibility for delivering various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team and learn from senior mentors
Requirements
- Programming experience in C and/or Rust
- Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
- Familiarity with version control practices, ideally Git
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, globally distributed team
- Ability to travel globally twice a year for company events of up to two weeks
- Candidates may be early-career professionals with 1–3 years of industry experience, recent university graduates, or university students with less than three months before graduation
- Python and Bash scripting, Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging, kernel patching and debugging, and experience with device drivers or BSPs are additional useful skills
