Staff Database Engineer

Responsibilities
- Identify, analyze, and resolve complex database performance and scalability issues.
- Analyze execution plans, query optimizers, indexing strategies, statistics, concurrency, locking, transaction isolation, and resource utilization.
- Design and implement performance improvements across queries, schemas, and workloads.
- Build automation and tooling to detect, diagnose, and remediate database performance and reliability issues.
- Partner with application and platform teams to improve database access patterns and system design.
- Design and implement data storage, streaming, analytics, governance, and data quality solutions.
- Establish and enforce database performance, enterprise data, policy, and procedural standards.
- Lead modernization, migration, and transformation projects.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in database performance, CDC, ETL, scalability, and security.
- Partner with senior leadership on data architecture strategy and make technology recommendations.
- Mentor engineers and technical staff and lead knowledge-sharing efforts.
- Explain complex technical concepts and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field with at least 14 years of related experience, or an advanced degree with 8 or more years of experience, or equivalent related work experience.
- Expert-level knowledge of performance tuning and optimization for transactional and analytical databases.
- Expertise with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora, Redshift, Iceberg, query optimization, execution plans, indexing, statistics, and transaction isolation.
- Experience designing and supporting database-backed APIs and distributed database solutions.
- Experience building automation and tooling for database performance and reliability.
- Experience using Terraform for infrastructure as code and AWS managed database services.
- Experience with AI-assisted bottleneck identification, distributed-system monitoring and troubleshooting, CI/CD deployment automation, capacity planning, workload modeling, and cost optimization.
- Proven record of improving database performance at scale and recognized expertise in database design, architecture, and optimization.
- Demonstrated leadership in enterprise database strategy and execution.
- Ability to mentor engineers, influence architecture decisions, operate as a cross-functional technical authority, and communicate effectively.
- Experience with cloud-native data systems, data architecture, governance, data quality, and enterprise standards.
