Base Salary

$198k - $295k/yr

Responsibilities

Build and maintain Hex’s core compute platform for code execution, SQL querying, and data processing.
Use DuckDB to enable interoperability between Python and SQL code written by users or AI agents.
Build intelligent caching systems to accelerate customer data queries.
Implement graph-based dependency frameworks to optimize multi-step execution plans.
Instrument complex, multi-language systems to identify performance bottlenecks.
Build product visualizations that help users understand their code’s performance characteristics.
Work across backend data systems and the frontend of Hex’s collaborative notebook interface.

6+ years of engineering experience working on complex, data-driven systems or applications.
Expert-level understanding of Python, SQL, Jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems.
Deep knowledge of data processing, databases, and performant data architectures.
Ability to design elegant abstractions, work in complex codebases, and improve correctness and developer productivity.
Strategic thinking aligned with business and product goals, while balancing velocity and engineering excellence.
Experience working in a remote-first team and strong communication skills in that context.
