Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, maintain, and improve industrial optimisation software and related numerical modelling components.
  • Investigate and resolve complex mathematical, algorithmic, and software engineering problems independently.
  • Own technically challenging work items and make implementation decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Work effectively within an established and partially legacy codebase while identifying thoughtful technical improvements.
  • Apply mathematical reasoning to modelling, optimisation, and algorithmic challenges.
  • Improve code robustness, performance, quality, and maintainability through debugging, profiling, diagnosis, and automated unit and regression testing.
  • Demonstrate potential to lead technical projects or workstreams without initially having formal leadership responsibility.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and technical support to less experienced developers.

Requirements

  • Strong mathematical background supported by an MSc, PhD, or equivalent experience.
  • Programming ability in at least one relevant language, such as C++, C, C#, or Fortran.
  • Experience in numerical modelling or mathematically intensive software development.
  • Relevant industrial, research, or advanced technical experience.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex and evolving codebase and communicate technical concepts clearly.
  • Potential to lead projects or technical workstreams.
  • Experience or background in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, operations research, mathematical engineering, numerically focused computer science, computational science, modelling, simulation, or similar analytical fields is relevant.
  • Experience with build and meta-build systems, debugging tools, performance and memory profilers, source control, and continuous integration or continuous development is desired.
  • Experience with Git and Azure DevOps is desired.
  • Background in linear algebra and/or Lagrangian analysis is highly desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, coaching, collaboration, influencing, conceptual-thinking, and technical-leadership abilities.
