Responsibilities
- Build and maintain shared database platform components, libraries, migration tooling, safety checks, standards, and developer-facing abstractions.
- Establish scalable patterns for database connectivity, transactions, pooling, retries, timeouts, query usage, and migrations.
- Build automation and internal tooling for safer, more repeatable database operations and developer self-service.
- Architect and improve AWS RDS/Aurora MySQL and PostgreSQL infrastructure, including replicas, backups, failover, monitoring, and capacity planning.
- Investigate and resolve systemic database issues such as inefficient queries, connection storms, lock contention, replication lag, and capacity bottlenecks.
- Create dashboards, alerts, SLOs, SLIs, runbooks, and operational readiness checks for database-backed services.
- Improve backup validation, restore testing, disaster recovery, failover readiness, access controls, auditability, encryption, secrets management, and least-privilege controls.
- Partner with application, infrastructure, security, compliance, and engineering teams; conduct design reviews and mentor engineers on database reliability and operations.
- Use automation and AI tooling to improve migration reviews, query analysis, incident investigation, documentation, and developer productivity.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of professional software engineering, infrastructure engineering, database engineering, SRE, or platform engineering experience.
- Strong production software engineering ability in Go, Python, or TypeScript.
- Demonstrated ability to build production-quality internal tools, libraries, frameworks, services, or platform components.
- Deep hands-on experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL in high-availability production environments.
- Strong knowledge of connection pooling, transactions, isolation levels, retries, timeouts, deadlocks, locking, migrations, and query execution.
- Experience with shared database access patterns, ORM wrappers, migration frameworks, or developer-facing database tooling.
- Hands-on AWS RDS/Aurora experience covering provisioning, upgrades, replicas, backups, failover, monitoring, parameter tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, ProxySQL, or application-level pooling.
- Ability to analyze performance using query plans, indexes, slow query logs, wait events, locks, metrics, and application traces.
- Experience designing safe production database migration processes and observability for database-backed applications.
- Experience with Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes, Helm, or similar infrastructure and delivery tooling.
- Ability to influence teams through design reviews, documentation, technical standards, and implementation.
- Demonstrated experience with Claude or equivalent large language model tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
- Preferred qualifications include Golang application development, platform capabilities for microservices, database libraries or SDKs, fintech or high-volume transactional systems, compliance-sensitive environments, access governance, operational automation, distributed systems, observability tools, and supporting data stores such as Elasticsearch.
Benefits
- The role is full-time and remote.
- Compensation is $5,000–$9,500 USD per month.
- Employees work in a culture emphasizing high standards, innovation, action, trust, constructive disagreement, and results.
