Base Salary
$320k - $485k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend systems processing every token on Claude’s generation path.
- Own latency and reliability end to end, including SLOs, error budgets, incident response, and postmortems.
- Ship hot-path changes through canaried and gradual rollouts with latency and error-budget gating and fast rollbacks.
- Optimize tail latency and keep costs flat as traffic, models, and per-request checks grow.
- Set technical direction, lead design reviews, make trade-offs with inference and research teams, mentor engineers, and improve operational standards.
Requirements
- Experience designing, building, and operating high-QPS systems at global scale with production accountability for incidents, outages, and remediation.
- Strong distributed-systems foundation, including replication, consistency trade-offs, failure modes, and SLO management under load.
- Ability to design for graceful degradation when dependencies slow down, streams drop, or deployments are partially rolled out.
- Experience shipping broad or all-encompassing changes to mission-critical systems, such as database migrations, interface changes, or rewrites.
- Strong candidates may have 8+ years of industry software engineering experience.
- Familiarity with LLM inference systems and transformer-based models is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a relevant field.
