Responsibilities
- Set and communicate technical direction across embedded firmware, controller runtimes, PLC execution environments, industrial communications, workstation applications, and hybrid software capabilities.
- Lead architecture decisions for real-time, distributed industrial automation systems with demanding timing, reliability, scalability, and maintainability requirements.
- Evaluate technologies and design approaches, prioritize technical work, reduce technical debt, and align engineering execution with customer, product, and business priorities.
- Provide technical leadership for C and C++ embedded firmware and runtime software on Linux, VxWorks, and real-time operating environments.
- Guide workstation applications used to configure, program, visualize, diagnose, monitor, and manage automation solutions.
- Coordinate with product marketing, product management, systems engineering, firmware, application, quality, release management, and customer-facing teams.
- Mentor developers, lead technical discussions, review designs, and promote code reviews, automated testing, validation, and strong engineering practices.
- Investigate complex issues involving timing, concurrency, memory usage, performance, communication latency, reliability, and distributed control behavior.
- Translate customer needs, product strategy, market expectations, and technical constraints into architectural direction and executable engineering plans.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
- At least 9 years of relevant software engineering experience, or at least 8 years with a master’s degree.
- Experience with high-performance embedded real-time systems and PLCs, industrial controllers, or industrial automation systems.
- Strong C and C++ software development experience.
- Experience with real-time operating systems such as VxWorks or RT Linux.
- Experience designing distributed or concurrent systems, or systems with strict timing and reliability constraints.
- Demonstrated ability to make architecture decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, guide implementation, mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, and review software designs.
- Strong communication skills for collaborating across engineering, product management, product marketing, and leadership stakeholders.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States; sponsorship will not be provided.
- Preferred experience includes technical leadership or software architecture for complex products, PLC runtime behavior, deterministic control execution, industrial communications, workstation applications, edge computing, industrial IoT, distributed control, high-availability or fault-tolerant systems, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, hardware-in-the-loop testing, system simulation, release validation, Agile or SAFe practices, and AI-assisted development tools.
