Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate substantial platform capabilities for robots, laboratory instruments, and automated equipment.
- Build backend services, APIs, SDKs, equipment adapters, data-ingestion components, workflow integrations, communications middleware, and developer tools.
- Integrate robot controllers, device drivers, vendor SDKs, sensors, actuators, PLCs, motion controllers, and equipment communication interfaces.
- Develop reusable equipment abstractions, state machines, asynchronous execution, persistence, recovery, diagnostics, and compatibility checks.
- Connect local equipment execution services with cloud orchestration and data platforms while addressing connectivity, latency, security, and operational constraints.
- Integrate and evaluate AI-assisted planning and agentic capabilities with tool use, context management, orchestration, human approval, and physical safety boundaries.
- Collaborate with scientists, product managers, hardware engineers, AI specialists, and research users to translate workflows and customer scenarios into software capabilities.
- Lead code reviews and design discussions, guide technical decisions, mentor engineers, coordinate dependencies, and contribute to engineering plans.
- Build unit, integration, functional, performance, resilience, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and system-level tests.
- Lead hands-on equipment integration, commissioning, calibration, troubleshooting, monitoring, incident response, and corrective actions.
- Support production services through a 24×7 on-call rotation and develop runbooks, support documentation, and operational automation.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on robotics, industrial automation, instrumentation, or software-controlled physical-system integration.
- Strong Python programming skills plus production experience with one or more of C++, Java, or Go.
- Demonstrated experience commissioning robotic systems or automated equipment using controllers, sensors, actuators, vendor SDKs, and device communication interfaces.
- Practical understanding of robotics hardware, motion control, equipment states, timing constraints, and hardware-software interactions.
- Experience designing reusable architectures, service APIs, typed interfaces, equipment adapters, and distributed-system components.
- Strong understanding of asynchronous execution, concurrency, message-based communication, persistence, retries, idempotency, and recovery from partial failures.
- Practical knowledge of agentic AI, including tool integration, context and state management, orchestration, evaluation, and controlled interaction with external systems.
- Experience troubleshooting across software, hardware, networking, and control systems.
- Experience with automated testing, simulation or hardware-in-the-loop testing, and system-level verification.
- Ability to lead substantial technical work, manage dependencies and risks, mentor engineers, and communicate across multidisciplinary teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Preferred experience includes OCI, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Docker, distributed data systems, event-driven architectures, workflow orchestration, cloud-to-edge systems, and remote physical-automation orchestration.
- Preferred familiarity includes ROS 2, DDS, OPC UA, EtherCAT, Modbus, vendor robotics SDKs, SiLA 2, LIMS, workflow engines, scheduling, data platforms, scientific data pipelines, RAG, AI agents, MCP, and enterprise AI integrations.
