Base Salary

$115k - $161k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Implement features and resolve defects in backend services and APIs supporting ESPN watch experiences.
  • Develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable systems for high-traffic streaming and content experiences.
  • Troubleshoot distributed systems, high-throughput APIs, caching layers, and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Design and implement reliable, resilient, observable, performant, and operationally ready solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, sprint planning, estimation, and delivery execution.
  • Support on-call rotations, incident response, live-event operations, and major sports event coverage.
  • Collaborate with product managers, frontend teams, platform teams, and partner engineering organizations.
  • Research and apply new technologies and agentic AI-assisted development workflows using Cursor and Claude Code.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, software engineering, electrical or electronics engineering, or a comparable field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3+ years of experience developing backend systems or APIs in Java; Spring Boot experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native development, particularly AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, and S3.
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tools including DataDog, New Relic, and CloudWatch.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, build systems such as TeamCity or Jenkins, and containerized deployments.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, caching strategies, performance optimization, and high-availability distributed systems.
  • Comfort working with live-event traffic, tight SLAs, on-call rotations, and high-stakes operational environments.
  • Preferred experience with Angular or similar frontend frameworks, HAProxy, Varnish, CDN configuration, edge caching, and media or streaming workflows.
  • Strong communication, collaborative problem-solving, and cross-team coordination skills.
