Base Salary
$154k - $185.334/yr
Responsibilities
- Deliver complex, multi-month Tempo projects from problem framing through rollout.
- Own components across ingestion, storage, query execution, and metrics generation.
- Design APIs and interfaces for Grafana products, LLM-driven assistants, and external integrators.
- Improve operational excellence through autoscaling, parameterized rollouts, actionable alerts, SLO ownership, and toil reduction.
- Optimize query performance, ingestion throughput, cost, and reliability at scale.
- Collaborate with Product and sibling teams to ship capabilities that unblock downstream products.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing.
- Participate in on-call, incident response, and post-incident learning.
- Contribute to the Tempo open-source project and engage with its community.
Requirements
- Significant hands-on experience building and operating distributed data systems in production, such as ingestion pipelines, storage engines, or query execution systems.
- Track record of delivering complex multi-month projects spanning design, delivery, and operations.
- Strong software craftsmanship and experience writing clean, robust, performant, maintainable software.
- Strong Go experience or transferable experience with Rust, C, or C++.
- Experience owning production services, participating in on-call, reducing toil, and working with SLOs.
- Customer-focused, pragmatic approach to iterative problem solving and delivery.
- Clear written and verbal communication for design documents, reviews, and remote asynchronous collaboration.
- Preferred experience with tracing, OpenTelemetry, or large-scale observability systems.
- Preferred experience designing query languages, SQL- or TraceQL-like engines, or programmatically consumed APIs.
- Preferred experience with Parquet or other columnar and analytical storage formats.
- Preferred experience operating multi-tenant, multi-cell SaaS infrastructure on Kubernetes.
- Preferred experience building structured APIs, metadata or discovery endpoints, deterministic outputs, or evaluation harnesses for AI/LLM consumers.
- Open-source contribution or maintainership experience is preferred.
- Experience using Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo on-call is preferred.
- Experience working in a fully remote, globally distributed team is preferred.
