Base Salary

$205k - $315k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale, cross-functional distributed-systems initiatives from technical vision through production deployment and long-term evolution.
  • Define the Elixir/OTP systems roadmap and architectural strategy, including reusable patterns, frameworks, and infrastructure.
  • Make primary technical decisions for distributed-systems architecture and establish engineering standards.
  • Identify reliability, scalability, and architectural risks; build organizational support and lead multi-quarter remediation initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, establish best practices, and develop emerging technical leaders.
  • Partner with executive leadership, product, design, frontend engineering, space operations, and astrodynamics teams on strategy and execution.
  • Improve reliability, deployment velocity, developer experience, documentation, architectural review, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead incident response, post-mortems, architectural migrations, and strategic planning for backend systems.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software development experience.
  • Expert-level mastery of Elixir and OTP, including BEAM internals, scheduling, memory management, garbage collection, process architecture, and runtime characteristics at scale.
  • Deep expertise designing and evolving large-scale distributed systems with fault tolerance, consistency, availability, clustering, and horizontal scalability.
  • Experience establishing testing strategies across unit, integration, property-based, and end-to-end testing layers.
  • Extensive experience building service architectures, libraries, and internal infrastructure used by multiple teams and products.
  • Expertise with gRPC, REST, WebSockets, and GraphQL integration patterns and cross-service API architecture.
  • Ability to work full-stack when necessary, with sufficient frontend and infrastructure knowledge to make architectural decisions and unblock teams.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives in Git-based workflows, code review standards, and collaborative engineering cultures.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility for DoD Secret or TS/SCI clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a similar discipline is preferred.
  • Experience as a technical lead, staff engineer, or principal engineer on business-critical production systems is preferred.
  • Experience with large-scale migrations, architectural overhauls, real-time distributed systems, PostgreSQL optimization, observability, incident response, regulated industries, technical writing, open-source contributions, or conference speaking is preferred.

Benefits

  • $205,000–$315,000 base salary, plus equity and benefits.

  • Onsite role for candidates based near Denver, Colorado, or Long Beach, California.
  • Flexible work hours and location are offered within the onsite role requirements.
