Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain shared database platform components, libraries, migration tooling, safety checks, query standards, and developer abstractions.
- Establish reliable and scalable database connection, transaction, pooling, retry, timeout, migration, and access patterns across environments.
- Build automation and internal tooling for safer database operations, provisioning, schema management, testing, observability, and developer self-service.
- Architect and improve AWS RDS/Aurora MySQL and PostgreSQL infrastructure, including replicas, backups, failover, parameter groups, monitoring, and capacity planning.
- Define and enforce standards for database access, schema design, migrations, indexing, query performance, security, and operational readiness.
- Investigate production issues using application telemetry, database metrics, logs, query plans, traces, and cloud infrastructure data.
- Create dashboards, alerts, SLOs, SLIs, runbooks, and readiness checks, and improve backup validation, restore testing, disaster recovery, and failover readiness.
- Partner with security and compliance teams on access controls, auditability, encryption, secrets management, least privilege, and PCI/SOC 2-aligned controls.
- Mentor engineers and use automation and AI tooling to improve migration review, query analysis, incident investigation, documentation, and developer productivity.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, database engineering, SRE, or platform engineering.
- Strong production programming ability in at least one of Go, Python, or TypeScript.
- Experience building production-quality internal tools, libraries, frameworks, services, or platform components used by other engineers.
- Deep hands-on experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL in high-availability production environments.
- Strong knowledge of connection pooling, transactions, isolation levels, retries, timeouts, deadlocks, locking, migrations, and query execution.
- Experience with shared database access patterns, ORM wrappers, migration frameworks, or developer-facing database tooling.
- Hands-on AWS RDS/Aurora experience covering provisioning, upgrades, replicas, backups, failover, monitoring, parameter tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, ProxySQL, or application-level connection pooling.
- Ability to analyze performance using query plans, indexes, slow query logs, wait events, locks, metrics, and application traces.
- Experience designing safe production database migration processes and observability for database-backed applications.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling such as Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes, or Helm.
- Ability to influence engineering teams through design reviews, documentation, standards, and practical implementation.
- Experience working with Claude or equivalent large language model tools is required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.
- Preferred experience includes Golang application development, platform capabilities for microservices, database libraries or SDKs, fintech or high-volume transactional systems, compliance-sensitive environments, governance and access controls, operational automation, distributed systems, and observability tooling.
