Responsibilities
- Design, build, maintain, and operate scalable search backend and retrieval infrastructure.
- Unify lexical and approximate-nearest-neighbor retrieval systems across Etsy products.
- Productionize retrieval and ranking models with ML modeling teams at scale.
- Develop indexing, query execution, and ranking features that improve latency, throughput, resilience, and relevance.
- Ensure reliable data pipelines, index health, and system performance while supporting live A/B experiments.
- Collaborate with applied scientists, Data Platform, ML Enablement, Search, and product engineering teams.
- Contribute to technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, mentorship, and performance feedback.
- Develop agentic workflows and use AI tools to improve individual and team velocity and developer experience.
Requirements
- Experience building and shipping production machine-learning systems, ideally for real-time search, recommendation, or advertising systems.
- Strong engineering and coding skills with proficiency in Python, Scala, Java, or equivalent languages.
- Experience optimizing system performance, implementing caching strategies, and scaling high-throughput, low-latency services.
- Ability to write reliable, well-tested, maintainable production code.
- Hands-on experience with AI and agentic frameworks, including designing and building agentic workflows.
- Familiarity with neural retrieval, semantic search, transformer-based models, and modern ranking techniques is preferred.
- Strong communication, empathy, collaboration, and continuous-learning skills.
