Responsibilities
- Define the technical vision and architecture for Smartly’s automation platform and platform capabilities.
- Guide architecture for data products that combine large-scale datasets into a unified data foundation.
- Evolve large-scale database architecture through sharding, replication, and scaling strategies.
- Drive technical vision, strategy, quality, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence across teams.
- Lead multi-quarter, cross-team technical initiatives and deliver hands-on architecture, design, prototyping, and implementation.
- Identify and address scalability, reliability, observability, and performance bottlenecks.
- Mentor engineers, share technical knowledge, participate in recruitment, and raise engineering standards.
Requirements
- 3+ years operating at Staff, Principal, Lead Engineer, or equivalent level while driving technical strategy across multiple teams.
- Proven experience leading initiatives spanning at least three engineering teams and delivering measurable technical improvements.
- 5+ years operating production systems where relational database architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance were critical concerns.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and architectural decisions involving consistency, availability, partition tolerance, replication, and sharding.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction without direct managerial authority.
- High standards for code quality, testing, and user experience, with strong communication and listening skills.
- Preferred experience with analytical databases such as ClickHouse, BigQuery, or Snowflake; infrastructure and cloud platforms; systems exposed safely to AI agents; and reliability, observability, or performance engineering initiatives.
