Base Salary
$163k - $204k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test core platform services for communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, compliance, and related capabilities.
- Shape architecture early, build self-service internal features and APIs, and own platform performance after launch.
- Enable product teams with reliable backend services and set engineering standards for other engineers.
- Mentor engineers while helping solve complex technical problems at large scale.
- Help scale Gusto’s Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications.
- Collaborate with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to identify customer pain points, prototype solutions, iterate, and launch frequently.
Requirements
- Typically 8+ years of software development experience.
- Experience building scalable, efficient platforms and owning multi-quarter projects with measurable user impact at scale.
- Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and end-to-end ownership of a platform area.
- Ability to mentor engineers and maximize their performance and impact.
- Experience with or interest in Ruby on Rails.
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver platform capabilities.
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, including evaluating and scaling AI use safely across teams.
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
