Staff Software Engineer, Orders

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of significant Orders platform capabilities spanning multiple teams, from cloud services to point-of-sale applications.
- Develop robust and scalable software with Design, Product, QA, and engineering partners.
- Drive architectural decisions for correctness, performance, and scale, and author and review technical designs.
- Provide design feedback and participate in code reviews.
- Align the Orders platform’s technical vision and roadmap with Toast’s strategy.
- Act as a domain expert and cross-team partner for order processing and synchronization.
- Advocate for coding best practices and raise engineering quality across the organization.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance across the Orders organization.
- Own business-critical production services, lead incident response, and drive long-term reliability improvements.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience with object-oriented languages such as Java or Kotlin.
- Track record of delivering significant platform capabilities across multiple teams in large engineering organizations.
- Combination of mobile and backend development expertise focused on distributed systems at high scale and in large codebases.
- Deep understanding of automated testing, quality, and SDLC best practices.
- Experience shipping reliable applications, microservices, or libraries to production.
- Expertise with API technologies such as GraphQL, including schema design, evolution, and versioning across many consumers.
- Excellent communication skills for complex technical topics across teams.
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, and MCP servers.
- Passion for technology, learning, and using emerging AI tools to improve development workflows and productivity.
