Responsibilities
- Architect and implement a deterministic industrial controls runtime for standard PC hardware.
- Define execution models covering scheduling, timing, state handling, concurrency, and fault containment.
- Design industrial I/O connectivity layers and custom drivers for PLC I/O modules and industrial protocols.
- Design high-availability systems with hot/standby redundancy, bumpless failover, watchdogs, heartbeats, and health monitoring.
- Develop mirrored or replicated runtime state for continuity across redundant hardware.
- Establish deterministic memory-management strategies focused on bounded risk and long-term stability.
- Define interfaces for telemetry, inbound control, diagnostics, configuration, and operator-facing systems.
- Translate process-control requirements into runtime architecture and software behavior with controls engineers.
- Build proof-of-concept systems, including an initial runtime prototype and minimum viable I/O drivers.
- Establish standards for testability, observability, fault detection, debugging, and software quality.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including deep ownership of systems, embedded, runtime, industrial automation, control, real-time, high-availability, or similarly high-reliability software.
- 5+ years designing, implementing, or operating software where timing behavior, fault handling, hardware interfaces, redundancy, recoverability, or deterministic behavior materially mattered.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, controls engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Deep experience with systems software, runtime systems, embedded software, operating-system-adjacent engineering, or industrial automation.
- Experience interfacing software with hardware, field devices, industrial protocols, or control systems.
- Understanding of deterministic execution, concurrency, scheduling, memory behavior, and fault handling.
- Ability to lead technically while remaining hands-on, handle ambiguous architecture needs, and deliver reliable working systems.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across software, controls, hardware, test, manufacturing, and operations teams.
- Experience mentoring engineers and establishing engineering standards is valued.
- Experience with industrial automation, embedded systems, kernel or runtime systems, power systems, robotics, aerospace or flight software, automotive controls, nuclear-adjacent controls, or other high-reliability physical-world domains is preferred.
- Experience with real-time platforms, PLC-based systems, redundancy, state replication, watchdogs, heartbeat systems, field protocols, RTOS or embedded Linux, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, fault injection, or control-system validation is preferred.
