Senior Software Engineer - Storefront Services Team

Base Salary
$116k - $195k/yr
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain features in the service powering BigCommerce storefronts, from requirements and technical design through production release.
- Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while maintaining backward compatibility.
- Evolve the storefront service to support AI-driven shopping agents and assistants.
- Investigate production issues and improve service performance and reliability.
- Review code from teammates and other engineering teams and participate in design reviews and pairing.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production.
- Preferred minimum Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, software, computer engineering, or MIS, or equivalent experience.
- Production experience with Scala or Kotlin is preferred; backend experience in Java, Go, or other languages with willingness to learn Scala is also considered.
- Experience translating stakeholder requirements into technical designs and delivering them to production.
- Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals, including caching headers, cookies, sessions, and timeouts.
- Familiarity with GraphQL APIs, service-to-service communication, caching, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs, including tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or Sentry.
- Familiarity with feature flags and gradual rollouts.
- Regular use of AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or Cursor, with careful review of generated code.
- Interest in how AI agents use APIs, including MCP and tool calling.
