Responsibilities
- Design, train, fine-tune, optimize, and deploy transformer-based language and foundation models.
- Build semantic retrieval, embedding, reranking, retrieval-augmented generation, query understanding, personalization, and ranking systems.
- Research knowledge distillation, model compression, quantization, pruning, and low-latency inference for on-device deployment.
- Develop models for intent prediction, personalized retrieval, learning-to-rank, and recommendation experiences.
- Evaluate language models, create AI quality metrics, and build automated and human-in-the-loop evaluation pipelines.
- Partner with engineering, research, product, and design teams to bring AI capabilities from research into large-scale production.
- Lead projects and contribute to technical strategy for proactive, multimodal, agentic, and personalized AI experiences.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
- Background in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, search, recommender systems, or generative AI.
- Experience training, fine-tuning, or deploying transformer-based models and large language models.
- Experience with transformers, embeddings, representation learning, and neural ranking.
- Programming proficiency in Python and/or C/C++, with production software experience using PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
- Preferred qualifications include a master’s or Ph.D. and experience with on-device or edge machine learning, model optimization, retrieval-augmented generation, vector search, semantic search, ranking, recommendation, evaluation, multimodal models, tool use, or agentic AI.
- Ability to prototype, conduct rigorous experiments, solve ambiguous technical problems, and translate research advances into production-quality machine learning solutions.
- Ability to work onsite in Cupertino, California, under Apple’s applicable work policies.
