Responsibilities
- Collaborate with NOAA meteorologists, NWS field offices, academia, and external partners to develop short- to medium-range forecast tools.
- Develop meteorological tools for diagnosing and predicting rainfall, snowfall, temperatures, and other hazard information.
- Develop web applications using modern industry languages and tools, including tools featuring map data.
- Develop and implement verification methods to evaluate new forecaster tools and operational or experimental forecasts.
- Use deterministic and ensemble prediction system data to support probabilistic forecasting products.
- Transition forecaster tools and web services into NOAA operations.
- Develop training materials for new tools and techniques.
- Provide analyses, recommendations, scientific publications, presentations, and outreach contributions as appropriate.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in meteorology, hydrology, or a related earth science field; an MS or higher is a strong plus.
- 2+ years of related experience is preferred.
- Experience with deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their application to hazardous weather diagnosis and prediction.
- Knowledge of short- to medium-range weather forecasting.
- Experience supporting software development in a team environment.
- Experience with Python and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.
- Some knowledge of GIS, JavaScript, cloud services, and version control systems.
- Ability to organize, plan, and complete projects independently.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for documentation and presentations.
