Base Salary

$158k - $233k/yr

Responsibilities

  • Design, operate, and improve highly available PostgreSQL environments across cloud and production platforms.
  • Define database reliability standards, reference architectures, operational runbooks, and service-level objectives.
  • Lead capacity planning, performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, and storage growth management.
  • Establish backup, restore, point-in-time recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
  • Design and validate replication, failover, partitioning, connection pooling, and high-availability solutions.
  • Monitor database health, latency, throughput, utilization, replication lag, errors, and reliability trends.
  • Develop automation for provisioning, configuration, upgrades, patching, schema changes, maintenance, and decommissioning.
  • Build guardrails, APIs, and self-service tooling for consistent and safe PostgreSQL operations.
  • Evaluate PostgreSQL capabilities, managed database services, extensions, operators, and operational tooling.
  • Participate in incident response and on-call rotations and improve detection, diagnosis, mitigation, and prevention.
  • Document technical decisions, procedures, failure modes, recovery strategies, and operational readiness criteria.
  • Mentor engineers and collaborate with engineering, technical leadership, security, and cross-functional stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of hands-on software development experience in an object-oriented programming language such as C#, C++, or Java.
  • 5+ years of experience operating PostgreSQL in large-scale, highly available production environments.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL internals, transactions, locking, write-ahead logging, vacuuming, autovacuum, replication, and recovery.
  • Experience with database performance analysis, query plans, indexing, connection management, and workload optimization.
  • Experience designing and validating backup, restore, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and automation using Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with Python, Go, Shell, or another scripting or programming language.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex production issues and communicating with engineering and cross-functional teams.
  • Preferred experience in database reliability, platform, or production engineering roles; PostgreSQL operators, managed PostgreSQL services, Patroni, PgBouncer, multi-region platforms, Kubernetes deployments, internal platforms, APIs, self-service workflows, database security, compliance, SLOs, error budgets, observability, and cloud operations.
  • Relevant cloud, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, or reliability engineering certifications are preferred.
