Principal Software Development Engineer - Business to Agent

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical vision, target architecture, roadmap, and success criteria for Expedia Group’s agentic marketing platform.
  • Design and ship systems that make Expedia Group content machine-readable, accessible, and preferred for different AI-agent archetypes.
  • Build agent-specific surfaces, indices, CLIs, measurement systems, observability, data/content products, and agent integrations.
  • Provide high-quality agent access through APIs, MCPs, feeds, authorization, observability, and SLOs.
  • Lead observability and experimentation to analyze agent reasoning, ranking signals, and bias.
  • Architect workflows around autonomous coding agents and sub-agents.
  • Anchor a small engineering squad, set engineering standards, review designs, and make architectural decisions.
  • Coach and mentor engineers while improving system design, AI integration, experimentation, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure systems are observable, resilient, secure, cost-efficient, and supported by clear SLOs and runbooks.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, data science, SEO/AEO, architecture, legal, and external teams to deliver outcomes.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience or 6+ years with a Master’s.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic or AI systems, including LLMs, RAG, tools/MCPs, and agent orchestration.
  • Expertise in systems architecture, API design, and third-party product and platform integration.
  • Product sense and the ability to prioritize what to build based on desirability, feasibility, and viability.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or Scala, with comfort across services, data, and infrastructure.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, container orchestration with Kubernetes, CI/CD, and observability tooling.
  • Understanding of data modeling, streaming and batch processing, and experimentation frameworks.
  • Experience architecting scalable, high-traffic services and translating product vision into end-to-end technical systems.
  • Practical experience with AI developer tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Codex, or Kiro, including evaluating their impact on developer workflows.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and experience partnering with marketing, product, data science, architecture, and legal.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers, building healthy engineering cultures, and influencing without formal authority.
  • Preferred: experience with marketing technology, ad platforms, growth or optimization stacks, production AI/ML integration, model evaluation, safety guardrails, frontier labs, agent platforms, or AI-native startups.
  • Preferred: ability to translate ambiguous strategy into executable roadmaps while balancing near-term delivery and long-term architecture.
