Responsibilities
- Build and maintain network-facing software layers for reliable communication between ocean nodes and shore.
- Design bandwidth-efficient egress pipelines that balance data fidelity, timeliness, and link constraints.
- Collaborate on APIs and schemas for reliable control and data exchange between subsystems.
- Develop bandwidth allocation and prioritization strategies with network engineers.
- Implement graceful degradation, buffering, retry logic, and prioritized retransmission during connectivity loss.
- Review and harden onboard software for vulnerabilities and ensure network-facing interfaces meet security standards.
- Analyze and optimize latency, throughput, and resource efficiency.
- Extend unit testing frameworks, integration tests, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strengthen code review, documentation, design reviews, architecture discussions, and cross-team engineering practices.
- Own designs from initial concept through fabrication and deployment at sea.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience developing software.
- 3+ years of experience with data-intensive or mission-critical systems.
- Proficiency in a systems programming language and version control.
- Competency with CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment.
- Experience building or maintaining production network-facing software, including connection lifecycles, protocol implementation, or communication reliability.
- Understanding of computer networking fundamentals, transport protocols, congestion control, and distributed systems.
- Experience designing systems for constrained, high-latency, intermittent, or expensive links such as satellite, maritime, or remote operations.
- Familiarity with authentication, authorization, encryption, and key management for networked systems.
- Desired experience with real-time or safety-adjacent systems, robotics, aerospace, marine systems, time-series databases, streaming analytics, data pipelines, and containerized build environments.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced collaborative environment and communicate effectively across disciplines.
- Ability to intermittently work longer hours and weekends for critical needs and travel to vendors and test sites as needed.
