Responsibilities

  • Lead technical contributions to modelling, simulation, and uncertainty quantification workstreams.
  • Review and approve technical outputs from teams of 4–10 people.
  • Oversee the development of software suites for computational nuclear and multiphysics applications.
  • Define strategies for developing, deploying, and evaluating software on emerging computing architectures.
  • Collaborate with national and international partners to develop codes for peta- and exa-scale systems.
  • Lead research proposals, externally funded programmes, consortia, and international projects.
  • Conduct original research into numerical methods and algorithms applicable to fusion and other domains.
  • Provide technical advice, training, mentoring, and skills development across UKAEA.
  • Present research at conferences and produce a high volume of high-quality publications.

Requirements

  • Doctorate or equivalent qualification in computational, mathematical, or physical science, or equivalent commercial or research experience.
  • Strong publication record or significant contribution to a relevant software library.
  • Significant experience using high-performance computing systems and at least one compiled or advanced scripting language.
  • Experience working in and leading distributed teams in mentoring, project management, or technical management roles.
  • Significant experience and international reputation in a relevant computational engineering field.
  • Strong mathematical foundation, particularly in numerical analysis.
  • Experience developing and implementing software testing strategies, including verification and validation.
  • Ability to assess algorithms for application to fusion-based codes.
  • Significant experience technically reviewing and approving contributions to large-scale software projects or journals.

  • Salary of £71,815 inclusive of a £7,700 specialist allowance.
