Base Salary
$320k - $485k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture and implementation of the vector database layer, including index structures, storage layout, query execution, and serving.
- Drive production readiness through benchmarking, capacity planning, workload onboarding, and operational tooling.
- Optimize recall, latency, throughput, and cost through quantization, filtered search, index refresh strategies, and compute-storage scaling.
- Extend the retrieval stack with lexical search, fused ranking, and hybrid retrieval capabilities.
- Define evaluation methodology, recall targets, latency objectives, cost-per-query metrics, and regression detection.
- Set technical direction, lead design reviews, make architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and participate in on-call.
Requirements
- Direct experience building a production vector database or approximate-nearest-neighbor search system at scale.
- Deep knowledge of graph-based, clustering-based, or disk-resident ANN index structures, vector quantization, and filtered search.
- Experience with search relevance and ranking.
- Strong systems programming skills in Rust, C++, or Go, including performance-critical and memory-intensive code.
- Experience designing and operating large-scale distributed storage or serving systems with strict latency and reliability requirements.
- Track record of independently delivering ambiguous, multi-quarter technical projects and driving alignment across teams.
- Interest in AI safety and Anthropic’s mission.
- Preferred qualifications include object-storage-backed or disaggregated database designs, full-text or hybrid retrieval systems, embedding models, GPUs or other accelerators, and technical leadership on database or search infrastructure teams.
