Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with meteorologists, NWS field offices, academia, researchers, and external partners to develop short- and medium-range forecast tools.
  • Develop tools for hazardous-weather information, including rainfall, snowfall, temperature, tropical cyclone, convection, winter storm, and atmospheric river applications.
  • Develop web applications using modern programming languages and tools, including mapped-data interfaces.
  • Use deterministic and ensemble prediction system data to support hazardous-weather diagnosis, prediction, and probabilistic products.
  • Transition forecaster tools and web services into operations at WPC and other NOAA offices.
  • Develop training materials for enhanced forecaster products, tools, and techniques.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, conferences, symposia, outreach events, analyses, and recommendations as assigned.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in meteorology, hydrology, or a related earth science field; an MS or higher is preferred.
  • Experience with deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their application to hazardous-weather diagnosis and prediction.
  • Knowledge of short- to medium-range weather forecasting.
  • Experience with GIS, GeoTIFF, JSON, and GeoJSON.
  • Knowledge of React, JavaScript, Zarr, cloud services, and version control systems.
  • Experience supporting software development in a team environment.
  • Experience with Python and shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.
  • Ability to independently organize, plan, and complete projects.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for documentation and presentations.
