
Staff / Principal Software Engineer, In-Vehicle AI Experiences

Responsibilities
- Define and build driver-facing vehicle capabilities from concept through production.
- Own features end to end across conversational behavior, on-device fulfillment, vehicle integration, UI, validation, and iteration.
- Write production Kotlin and contribute to Python-based agents, NLU, LLM orchestration, APIs, and connected services.
- Prototype experiences, evaluate them in realistic vehicle environments, and productionize successful concepts.
- Diagnose issues across application, assistant, vehicle, and cloud boundaries.
- Make pragmatic tradeoffs involving customer value, reliability, latency, offline behavior, resource constraints, maintainability, and driver distraction.
- Partner with Product, UX, conversation design, vehicle software, systems, platform, safety, privacy, and validation teams.
- Establish reusable engineering patterns and workflows, mentor engineers, and contribute to roadmap and technical direction.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum 8+ years of production software experience for Staff or 10+ years for Principal.
- Strong hands-on development skills in Kotlin, Java, C++, Python, or a comparable language, with ability and interest to work primarily in Kotlin and Android.
- Record of independently delivering complex, user-facing features across multiple components or systems.
- Strong system-design, debugging, testing, and operational-quality judgment.
- Experience leading technical work across organizational or functional boundaries and communicating with technical and cross-functional partners.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly and use modern AI-assisted software-development workflows effectively and responsibly.
- Preferred experience includes Android or Android Automotive OS, automotive or resource-constrained software, vehicle integration, voice or conversational products, LLM-enabled product development, safety-conscious UX, cloud-connected services, authentication, distributed systems, testing, observability, performance analysis, CI/CD, and field-quality feedback systems.

- Hybrid work arrangement requiring reporting to Mountain View, California at least three times per week or as otherwise dictated by the business.
