Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, modify, and integrate software for telescope mirror fabrication systems, including casting furnaces, grinding equipment, and polishing equipment.
  • Build software spanning low-level and real-time equipment control, data acquisition, data processing, analysis, graphical user interfaces, and web-based applications.
  • Develop software for optical metrology systems involving interferometry, deflectometry, laser tracking, scanning pentaprism testing, and related measurement systems.
  • Design technical approaches and develop software for new research and development projects.
  • Collaborate with optical, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers on multidisciplinary systems.
  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and other software tests for software and hardware systems.
  • Troubleshoot software, equipment interfaces, data acquisition systems, and related technical issues.
  • Process, analyze, and manage fabrication and metrology data for research, engineering, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Create and maintain technical, software, user, and project documentation and review documentation produced by others.
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot computers, software environments, and network-connected systems supporting specialized equipment.
  • Participate in project planning, technical discussions, design reviews, and implementation activities.
  • Train scientists, engineers, technicians, and other users on software applications and equipment interfaces.
  • Follow safety protocols while working around machinery, vehicles, electrical and energized systems, chemicals, elevated locations, and confined spaces.

Requirements

  • Proficiency developing software with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages.
  • Proficiency with Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to develop, configure, or interface software with microcontrollers and embedded hardware platforms.
  • Experience or ability to work with Delta Tau PMAC, Raspberry Pi, and Teensy/Arduino systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Safety-focused approach to producing reliable and correct software operation.
  • Ability to work safely in fabrication and testing environments involving noise, machinery, electrical equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, elevated platforms, and restricted-access spaces.
