Responsibilities
- Define and drive technical strategy and multi-year architecture decisions for Stripe Issuing.
- Design, build, and maintain APIs, backend services, and large-scale systems handling billions of money movement requests.
- Own technical solutions for authorization flows, spending controls, cardholder management, and card program configuration.
- Lead infrastructure investments supporting geographic expansion, new card program types, and platform extensibility.
- Drive cross-functional engineering initiatives from requirements and architecture through launch and post-launch iteration.
- Make build-versus-reuse decisions and create technical roadmaps balancing delivery with long-term platform health.
- Debug and resolve critical production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack.
- Improve engineering standards, tooling, processes, and operational rigor.
- Advise engineering and product leadership on technical trade-offs and downstream business implications.
- Mentor and grow senior engineers and contribute to engineering hiring and culture.
Requirements
- 10+ years of industry software engineering experience with demonstrated staff-level or equivalent scope.
- Proven experience designing and shipping large-scale user-facing products backed by highly available and financially correct distributed systems.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering projects end to end, from requirements through architecture, delivery, and post-launch iteration.
- Strong API design skills and the ability to create developer-friendly interfaces for complex financial and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to influence technical direction and align multiple teams without direct authority.
- Excellent written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
- High ownership and comfort defining ambiguous problems and execution plans.
- Preferred: experience with real-time transaction processing systems involving authorizations, payments, ledgering, or settlement.
- Preferred: familiarity with card network protocols, BIN sponsorship models, or issuing bank integrations, including Visa or Mastercard.
- Preferred: experience with regulated financial services, compliance-aware design, audit trails, financial controls, KYC, or KYB flows.
- Preferred: background in embedded finance, card-as-a-service, or Banking-as-a-Service platforms.
- Preferred: experience with high-volume event-driven architectures and their reliability and consistency tradeoffs.
- Preferred: track record mentoring senior engineers and contributing to engineering hiring and culture.
