Responsibilities

  • Own the firmware architecture for every controller on Bolt’s autonomous mobile base, including partitioning, communication buses, timing, update paths, and diagnostics.
  • Lead firmware bring-up for prototype builds, including board support packages, drivers, and bootloaders, in partnership with electrical and mechanical teams.
  • Define coding standards, review practices, test expectations, and release processes for AMR firmware.
  • Develop drive-module and motor-control firmware covering current, velocity, and steering loops, encoder feedback, and coordinated wheel control.
  • Own firmware for power sequencing, battery-management communication, charging, docking, and battery swap systems.
  • Integrate base sensors and peripherals and deliver their data reliably to the robot’s compute systems.
  • Define interfaces between firmware and navigation, fleet, safety, and upper-body software.
  • Build hardware-in-the-loop tests, fault-injection systems, production-test firmware, and diagnostic tools.
  • Debug issues spanning firmware, electrical, mechanical, and component behavior and drive corrective work to closure.
  • Mentor AMR embedded engineers, review designs, and help grow the firmware team.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience, including leading firmware for a battery-powered product with motors through production.
  • Hands-on motor-control firmware experience, including field-oriented control, current sensing, and encoders; traction or steering-drive experience is preferred.
  • Mastery of C and C++ on microcontrollers, RTOS design, real-time scheduling, interrupts and DMA, and peripheral drivers.
  • Experience with power sequencing, battery-management-system communication, and charging.
  • Ability to use oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and schematics to diagnose timing, signaling, and electrical issues.
  • Experience leading engineers through a new-product-introduction cycle.
  • Ability to influence technical direction without direct authority and partner with hardware engineering, motion planning, safety, and executive leadership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for explaining complex technical risks and strategies to non-technical leadership.
  • Prior work on mobile robots, AGVs, or autonomous vehicles is preferred.
  • Experience with swerve, omnidirectional, or other multi-wheel steering-drive control is preferred.
  • Functional safety development experience with ISO 13849 or IEC 61508 is preferred.
  • Experience with over-the-air firmware update systems for fielded fleets is preferred.

Benefits

  • On-site role at the Boston-area office, with some flexibility on office days after ramp-up.
  • Base salary range of $200,000 to $230,000 depending on experience.
  • Employee stock options for full-time employees.
  • Paid time off and medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) for regular full-time employees.

About Standard Bots

51-200 employees

We believe AI-native robots are the essential power tool of the 21st century — the tool that will grow American manufacturing and help every American worker to be a force at work. You just show your robot how it’s done, and it learns through demonstration. No coding, no consultants, just unbox and deploy faster than anything else on the market. We are expanding our Glen Cove, New York facility to 70,000 square feet to scale our vertically integrated production process. We currently design almost all our own parts, including our own actuators, and we assemble every final product in-house. By 2027, we’ll manufacture everything — from metal in to robots out — right here in America. More at standardbots.com
